M9 is more than a museum – it’s a striking symbol of Mestre’s urban regeneration and cultural innovation.

Inaugurated in 2018, this cutting-edge multimedia hub takes visitors on an immersive journey into Italy’s 20th century, tracing the dramatic shifts in lifestyle, culture, economy, and science through state-of-the-art technology and interactive storytelling.

The architectural project seamlessly blends bold contemporary design with the former 16th-century convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, later transformed into a Napoleonic barracks and military district known as Caserma Matter. Its covered inner courtyard now serves as a vibrant public square, connecting the museum with lively neighbourhood spots such as Corte Legrenzi and Piazza Ferretto, where cafés, shops, and restaurants spill out into the streets.

Inside, M9 hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the 20th century, alongside temporary shows and an auditorium for cultural events, concerts, and conferences. Spread across the first and second floors, the permanent collection unfolds in eight thematic sections, presenting Italy’s modern heritage through photographs, film, audio, and immersive installations – making history feel alive and tangible.

The third floor is dedicated to rotating exhibitions, enriched since 2021 by additional spaces for new cultural projects. With a dynamic programme of public events, educational activities, and inclusive initiatives designed for schools and communities, M9 aims to be not just a museum but an open house for the city and the nation – a place where past, present, and future meet in dialogue.

Pertini. The art of democracy

From 20 November 2025 to 31 August 2026, M9 – Museo del '900 presents the first major exhibition ever held in Italy dedicated to Sandro Pertini, the most beloved President of the Republic.
On the 130th anniversary of his birth and in the year that celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Resistance and the referendum of 2 June, the exhibition traces the life of Sandro Pertini through masterpieces by the most important artists of the 20th century, iconic objects, unpublished images and historical films.
A choral narrative that intertwines art, history and democracy, revealing the moral strength of a man who made freedom and justice his mission.
